Overview
Two adjacent bodies of work: 20+ press releases drafted and placed at East River PR & Marketing with a 100% placement rate, plus a cold outreach campaign at D3 Sports Tech that booked 50 meetings in two weeks at an 80% response rate. Different audiences, same underlying skill — writing the editors and operators actually want to read.
The problem
Editors get hundreds of pitches a week. Most never get opened. The job at East River was the same as the job at D3: figure out what would actually be useful to the person on the other end, write something they'd be willing to read, and follow up enough to be noticed but not enough to be annoying.
Process
- 01
Researched each outlet's editorial calendar and each editor's recent coverage before drafting anything
- 02
Interviewed clients to extract the real story — not the marketing version, the version a reporter would actually file
- 03
Drafted in AP style: headline, lede, body, boilerplate, and a pitch email tailored to a specific journalist
- 04
For D3 Sports Tech: built a cold outbound sequence with personalized intros and a tight three-touch cadence
- 05
Tracked every placement and every meeting; ran the metric back into the next campaign
Solution
A disciplined writing-and-distribution process. Real news hooks for press releases. Personalized, short, value-forward openers for cold outreach. Same principle in both: the message earns the reader's attention before it asks for anything.
Results
20+ press releases drafted, 100% media placement rate. 50 meetings booked in two weeks at D3 Sports Tech at an 80% response rate. Plus script writing, long-form, and crisis-comm work for East River clients. The methodology now lives inside Copytier's outbound stack.
